Mei-Ramew Café: Where Indigenous Cuisine meets Circular Economy

Mei-Ramew Café, an initiative of NESFAS, is a pioneering space that celebrates Indigenous Peoples’Food Systems of Meghalaya and the wider North East. Built upon the guiding principle of “Mei-Ramew,” or “Mother Earth, the café promotes locally sourced, seasonal, and culturally significant foods prepared using traditional knowledge and practices.

The café serves as more than just a dining space; it is a living platform for conservingagrobiodiversity, supporting indigenous farmers, and strengthening local livelihoods. By prioritising ingredients procured directly from community producers, Mei-Ramew Café ensures fair value for farmers while offering visitors an authentic taste of indigenous cuisines that are often underrepresented in mainstream food spaces.

Through its menu, storytelling, and community engagement, the café raises awareness about the importance of sustainable food systems, nutrition diversity, and ecological stewardship. It also provides a space for knowledge exchange, cultural appreciation, and dialogue around food sovereignty.

NESFAS has supported the establishment of 7 Mei-Ramew Cafes to date.
