Conservation Biologist
- Background:
Northeast Slow Food and Agrobiodiversity Society (NESFAS) is undertaking a project to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity and wild biodiversity in various villages in Meghalaya. As part of this work, NESFAS is undertaking the upgradation of People’s Biodiversity Registers through strengthening of Biodiversity Management Committees. Following the upgradation of the PBRs, BMCs and communities are engaged in a process to improve the management of biodiversity and natural resources within their lands. As part of this work, NESFAS seeks to hire a Conservation Biologist to provide technical knowledge and implementation support in the conservation/restoration of forests and associated biodiversity.
- Scope of work:
The candidate will provide domain knowledge in the field of biodiversity and forest conservation/restoration as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The work will involve a combination of desk-based planning, training of field staff and overseeing implementation in the field. The Conservation Biologist will receive strong technical support from NESFAS and partner organizations in undertaking the above task.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Support the planning (using standardized scientific methods) of field surveys of wild faunal biodiversity including mammals, birds, fish, herpetofauna and insects
- Support the planning (using standardized scientific methods) of surveys for wild flora and forests, using a combination of both field methods and remotely sensed data
- Lead the training of community partners in undertaking field surveys for the above goals
- Support the development of management interventions that could enhance conservation/restoration of biodiversity and forests
- Lead periodic standardized surveys to monitor and evaluate the impact of conservation interventions
- Qualifications
Essential qualifications:
- Master’s degree along with two years of experience in a field relevant to biodiversity conservation from a recognized university; a bachelors degree in a relevant field along with four years of relevant experience may also be considered
- Specialist domain knowledge (particularly on identification) on at least one of the taxa mentioned above
- Knowledge of field methodologies for data collection across flora and fauna
- The ability to work in hilly, rainy and remote field locations
- Basic understanding of Geographical Information Systems
Desirable qualifications:
- An understanding of storage and analysis of ecological data
- Expertise in Geographical Information Systems, including data analysis and planning
- Prior experience in the collection of data for People’s Biodiversity Registers
- Prior experience in Natural Resource Management
